At times this small, prolific brachopod becamed numerous to completely coat the surface of the ocean flow in a solid layer. This is shown in the background image of this web page.

This fossil lives up to its name, sometimes paving the ocean floor during a single time horizon. This specimen has been whitened to improve contrast.
